Trencherfield Mill
Wigan Pier · 12 miles
Located beside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at the historic wharf known as Wigan Pier, Trencherfield Mill is a Grade II-listed cotton-spinning mill built in 1907. The landmark, recorded by Historic England as a heritage feature, forms part of the Wigan Pier regeneration area in the town of Wigan, Greater Manchester. Its four-storey brick structure, with a circular chimney modelled on Venice’s St Mark’s Campanile, stands on the canal bank that once carried coal and finished cloth between the Lancashire pits and the textile factories. The mill’s most visible attraction is the restored 2,500 hp triple-expansion steam engine, originally supplied by J & E Wood of Bolton and halted in 1968. The engine is steamed on selected dates during the year, allowing visitors to hear the 26-foot flywheel and see the 54 ropes in operation. Internally the building has been converted into a mixed-use complex that includes commercial and retail units, leisure facilities, a call centre for EE and BT, and 52 one- and two-bedroom apartments. Access is straightforward via the canal towpath and the town’s rail links on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal corridor; no specific admission charge is mentioned for the engine demonstrations, which form part of the heritage programme organised by Wigan Council.

Model Railway Village
Southport · 7.5 miles
A miniature landscape dedicated to trains and railways occupies a small park in Southport, England. Conceived by local residents Ray and Jean Jones, permission from Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council was secured in 1995 to develop the site within Kings Gardens on the seafront. The project became the United Kingdom’s first model railway village and opened to the public in 1996 as the country’s largest outdoor G-gauge railway display at that time. The Jones family continues to operate the attraction. The railway system uses a 45 mm gauge, one of the largest garden railway formats in the nation, and runs five LGB trains on a continuous 500 metre loop. The overall site covers roughly 1.5 acres (0.61 ha) and the miniature environment is built to a 1:18 scale, featuring more than 200 models that reflect architectural styles from Merseyside and West Lancashire. Structures are crafted from marine plywood and resin, all fabricated on-site by an in-house workshop that also produces miniature doors, windows, roofing sections and figurines. A waterway links two natural ponds, adding further detail to the scene. Appearances on television programmes such as BBC One’s *Foot in the Past* (1996), *Granada Tonight* and *To Buy or Not to Buy* (Series 8, Episode 12) have highlighted the village. Classified as a park, the Model Railway Village lies nearest to the town of Southport. Its location within Kings Gardens makes it readily reachable for visitors exploring the Southport seafront area. No specific admission or facility information is supplied in the source material.
