About Manchester Tennis And Racquet Club
Since 1876 the Manchester Tennis & Racquet Club has been dedicated to preserving the ancient sport of real tennis, the original racquet game from which modern lawn tennis developed. Situated on Blackfriars Road in Salford, the club occupies a historic site that has housed its facilities since 1880, offering members a blend of heritage and contemporary play. The club’s courts include a purpose-built real tennis court, a rackets court, and adapted surfaces for padel, pickleball and squash. Changing rooms, a lounge and a well-stocked pro shop support the on-court experience, while expert coaching is available for players ranging from beginners to seasoned competitors. Coaching staff provide technique refinement and guidance on the nuances of each discipline. Beyond regular play, the club organises taster sessions, tournaments and social events that encourage participation across its diverse membership. Equipment is supplied for taster sessions, with the only requirement being suitable court shoes. These introductory sessions are promoted both on-site and via the club’s social media channels, inviting newcomers to try real tennis and the other racquet sports on offer. Members also benefit from reciprocal arrangements with clubs worldwide, including London’s Savile Club, and enjoy special rates at the nearby Maldron Hotel on Chapel Street. The reciprocal network provides options for accommodation, meetings and dining when travelling for business or leisure. This combination of historic courts, coaching, community events and reciprocal privileges makes the Manchester Tennis & Racquet Club a distinctive venue for racquet sport enthusiasts in the region.
