A live music project that stages early evening events in unconventional spaces has arrived in Rochdale, with a historic town centre church hosting its latest series of shows. The Early Doors Club launched its programme at St Chad's Church following the installation of a new stage alongside professional sound and lighting equipment.

The initiative is delivered by The Snug Coffee House, based in Atherton, and is expanding across Greater Manchester using funding from the GMCA's Culture Fund. Last month, St Chad's Church held an introductory show featuring Liam Fender supported by Rebecca Spooner. The next performance takes place on Friday, 23 October 2026, headlined by Nigel Clark, frontman of the Britpop band Dodgy. He will be supported by 19-year-old singer and songwriter Grace Rose from Heywood.

The project aims to make live performances accessible by scheduling events that start in the late afternoon and finish by 21:00, catering to public transport users and those who prefer earlier evenings. To remove financial barriers, tickets are offered on a pay-what-you-can basis. Performances take place in community spaces such as cafés, churches and heritage venues to bring cultural events directly to high streets.

Boosting Town Centres and Local Talent

Since holding its first event in 2023, The Early Doors Club has organised more than 160 shows, drawing over 13,500 attendees and providing platforms for upwards of 250 artists. Organisers note that approximately half of all audiences travel from outside the immediate host areas, contributing to local economies and town centre footfall.

Event manager Ben Morgan stated that Rochdale represented a key expansion area, building upon the work of local cultural teams to bring events directly into communities. He added that the commitment to improving cultural access shown by the Rochdale Development Agency made the town an ideal location for the initiative.

Councillor Sue Smith, cabinet member for communities and co-operation at Rochdale Borough Council, welcomed the arrival of the club in a prominent local venue. She noted that live music brings communities together, supports the local economy, and showcases the borough as a destination for entertainment, while providing residents with professional performances nearby.

Karen Boardman, music development manager at Rochdale Development Agency, highlighted that creating paid live performance opportunities for local musicians forms a central part of wider plans for music growth across the borough. Further dates and line-ups for subsequent Rochdale events are expected to be announced soon.
