About University of Leeds Speleological Association

Since 1957 the University of Leeds Speleological Association has organised caving trips that span the Yorkshire Dales, the wider UK and destinations abroad, giving members the chance to explore caves from the local Pennines to the depths of the Spanish Picos. The club’s core activity is organised caving, ranging from short weekend outings to extended expeditions that have produced notable discoveries such as Marble Sink, Far Country in Gaping Gill, Langcliffe Pot, Black Shiver Pot and the celebrated Kingsdale Master Cave. Membership is open to students and staff of the University of Leeds, alumni, and anyone with an interest in speleology, meaning the community includes both local cavers based in West Yorkshire and participants scattered across England and the globe. A distinct sub-section, the Leeds University Union Caving Society (LUUCaS), operates under the university union and concentrates on student involvement, while the broader association benefits from the experience of long-standing non-student members. The club’s library, located on the bottom floor of the Edward Boyle Library, holds an extensive collection of caving literature that supports both training and research. The association has played a part in several phases of British caving history. In the early 1960s it embraced wetsuits, enabling deeper water passages, and later adopted Single Rope Techniques, which simplified vertical descents. Collaborative projects with other clubs have led to extensions of Penyghent Pot, new caves in Dentdale, and contributions to the Three Counties System, including work on Boundary Pot, Marble Steps and Skylight Passage. Recent international work includes expeditions to Wales, Ireland, the United States, New Zealand, Borneo, the French Pyrenées, the Austrian Alps and the Spanish Picos, often resulting in kilometres of newly surveyed passage. Closer to home the group has re-surveyed sections of the Fountains Fell area and is publishing a definitive guidebook series titled Northern Caves for the Yorkshire Dales. With a mix of keen newcomers and seasoned explorers, the University of Leeds Speleological Association continues to foster caving skills, knowledge and discovery from its base in Leeds.
