About this role
The Bereavement Officer role sits within the Bereavement team at Basildon Hospital, part of Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. You will work alongside the Lead Bereavement Officer to manage the day-to-day operation of the office, ensuring compliance with national and trust guidelines for supporting bereaved families. The position involves administrative oversight of the Eden electronic database, coordination with medical staff on death certification and cremation documentation, and liaison with ward teams, mortuary staff, and local councils regarding public health funerals. Responsibilities also include preparing procurement orders and maintaining accurate records of patient deaths and notifications to GPs. The role requires resilience in a high-emotion environment and flexibility to work across seven days, including bank holidays, as part of the Trust’s new Corneal Donation Service.
Essential requirements include proven experience supporting bereaved families in an end-of-life context, such as prior work as a Bereavement Officer, Funeral Officer, or within a Coroner’s or Funeral Directors’ team, alongside experience in the NHS or similar settings. Essential qualifications feature strong IT proficiency with Excel and Word, alongside familiarity with medical terminology and administrative processes. Desirable attributes encompass additional administrative or IT qualifications, awareness of organ donation frameworks, and the ability to navigate complex NHS documentation. The permanent position offers a salary of £25,760 per annum under the Agenda for Change pay scheme, classified as Band 3, with options for full-time, part-time, or job-sharing arrangements. Applications must be submitted by 7 October 2026 via the original advert, with inquiries directed to Karen Arnup, Lead Nurse and Manager for Bereavement Services.
