Durdham Down
Westbury Park · 1.2 miles
Durdham Down forms the eastern half of The Downs, a 400-acre stretch of public open space in Bristol that adjoins Clifton Down to the south-west. The area lies close to Westbury Park and is bounded by a mixture of scrubby hawthorns, avenues of mature horse-chestnuts and open grassland, with Victorian houses lining its edges. Its origins lie in grazing land granted by an Anglo-Saxon charter of 883 and later used as common pasture for the manor of Henbury throughout the Middle Ages. During the English Civil War the down served as an assembly point for both Royalist and Parliamentarian forces. In the mid-nineteenth century the city acquired the land, ending the long-standing grazing rights and establishing a joint Downs Committee, which still oversees the site together with the Society of Merchant Venturers. A notable landmark is the White Tree roundabout, a road junction whose name dates back to the nineteenth century, while a small group of pine trees known as the “Seven Sisters” remains a visible feature despite losses in storms and vandalism. The open expanse supports a range of leisure pursuits: walkers, joggers and kite-flyers use the flat grass, and organised football matches take place on pitches maintained for the Bristol Downs Football League. Historical sporting events, such as early cricket matches and horse-races, are recorded, and the ground hosted Gloucestershire County Cricket Club’s inaugural first-class match in 1870. Public amenities include toilets near the water tower on Stoke Road, marked by a blue plaque commemorating former attendant Victoria Hughes. Access is unrestricted and free of charge, with the park reachable on foot or by local bus routes serving Westbury Park. A Downs Ranger is appointed by the committee to look after the area.
