🌿 Nature reserves
Adelaide Nature Reserve
Steele's Village · 0.6 miles
A stretch of south-facing meadow and adjoining woodland in north-west London forms the Adelaide Nature Reserve, covering parts of Chalk Farm, Primrose Hill, Belsize Park and Swiss Cottage; OpenStreetMap records Steele’s Village as the nearest town. The site is owned by Network Rail and leased to the London Borough of Camden, while day-to-day care is provided by the Adelaide Nature Reserve Association in partnership with Camden Council. Designated a Local Nature Reserve and a Grade 1 Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, the area has been set aside for wildlife since 1984 after centuries of use as a hay meadow for the city’s horses, a 19th-century railway corridor (with Stephenson’s tunnel completed in 1837 nearby), and, until the Second World War, a patchwork of domestic gardens and a tree nursery. A plaque commemorates co-founder Ursula Granville, and the reserve received formal LNR status in 2011. The reserve’s dominant meadow supports a rich assemblage of plants, from birdsfoot trefoil and cowslip to wild gladiolus and yarrow, while the woodland hosts several oak species, rowan, ash and silver birch. Two ponds add aquatic interest, one equipped with a dipping platform, and a circular footpath loops the site. Wildlife surveys record a notable range of insects—including rare solitary wasps, a chafer beetle last seen in Britain in the 1950s, and numerous butterflies and moths—as well as birds such as green woodpecker, tit species and occasional meadow pipit, supported by feeding stations and bird boxes. Mammals like foxes, squirrels and hedgehogs, plus newts in the pond, are also regular occupants. Public entry is via Adelaide Road, east of Primrose Hill Road, and the reserve welcomes visitors on Saturdays and Sundays; wheelchair access is unavailable due to the steep slope. Regular events occur on the last Sunday of each month from 11:00 to 15:00 and at other times by arrangement, featuring bird and plant surveys, nature trails, wildlife-themed crafts and quizzes, with volunteers from Green Gym, University College London, Interact and similar groups contributing. Admission is free, and facilities include a mural depicting local fauna, an insect house, bee nesting boxes and logs left for beetles and fungi.

Queer Britain
King's Cross · 0.6 miles
A museum devoted to British LGBTQ history and culture occupies the ground floor of 2 Granary Square in the King’s Cross area of London. Operated by Queer Britain Museum Ltd, the venue presents three interlinked galleries together with a shop, and sits within a building owned by the Art Fund. Visitors can move freely between the exhibition spaces, and the site offers step-free access and on-site toilets; admission is free and opening hours are listed on the museum’s public timetable. Founded in February 2018 by former Gay Times editor Joseph Galliano-Doig and Ian Mehrtens, the organisation was registered as a charity in September 2019. After a series of temporary shows, the museum opened its permanent location on 5 May 2022, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Britain’s first gay pride march. The inaugural display, “Welcome to Queer Britain”, drew from the museum’s photography archive, and the first full exhibition, “We Are Queer Britain”, filled all three galleries from July 2022. Following a closure for refurbishment in November 2025, the museum reopened in February 2026 with a new collections gallery organised around six themes—Resist!, Club Kids, Queer Creativity, Body and Mind, Live, Laugh, Love and The World Around Us. Recent special exhibitions, “Queer Print” and “40 Years of BFI Flair”, were launched at that time, while the broader collection remains stored at the Bishopsgate Institute when not on display.

🌳 Parks & gardens
The Regent's Park
Regent's Park · 0.6 miles
Regent’s Park occupies 410 acres (170 ha) of north-west Inner London, straddling the City of Westminster and the London Borough of Camden. The land passed to the Crown after the 1530s dissolution of the monasteries, initially serving as a hunting and tenant-farming area. In the 1810s the Prince Regent proposed a pleasure garden, and the layout was executed by John Nash together with James and Decimus Burton, the latter receiving private financing from developer James Burton when the Crown Estate withdrew its commitment. The park is recorded on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens at Grade I. Today the site combines open parkland, ornamental water features and a series of public gardens. An outer ring road of 4.45 km (the Outer Circle) and an inner 1 km loop (the Inner Circle) encircle the most intensively tended area, Queen Mary’s Gardens, while the remainder is largely pedestrian-only apart from the Broad Walk, a shared-use path. Attractions include a lake supporting a heronry and waterfowl, a boating area, sports pitches, children’s playgrounds, the Italian and English Gardens, the Queen Elizabeth II Garden and the Open Air Theatre within the Inner Circle. The northern edge houses London Zoo and the Zoological Society of London’s headquarters; the southern side is bordered by Regent’s University London. Regent’s Canal runs along the northern perimeter, and the private grounds of Winfield House, the U.S. Ambassador’s residence, lie in the western sector. Public areas are managed by The Royal Parks charity, with the Crown Estate Paving Commission overseeing aspects of the built environment and the Crown Estate retaining the freehold. The park is listed on the official Royal Parks website where opening times are published; visitors should consult that source for current hours. Access is provided by the surrounding road network and pedestrian routes, and facilities such as cafés, toilets and information points are distributed throughout the grounds.
