View allGreenbank Gardens
High Carolside · 17 miles
A walled garden of about 2.5 acres lies on the estate that surrounds Greenbank House, a Category A listed Georgian mansion built in 1763 for Glasgow merchant Robert Allason. The property sits roughly six miles north-west of Glasgow city centre and is closest to the settlement of High Carolside. Ownership and day-to-day management rest with the National Trust for Scotland, which keeps the garden and house accessible to visitors. The house, comprising sixteen rooms together with barns and stables, welcomes guests from March until October, while the garden remains open throughout the year. The garden is organised into around twelve distinct sections, each framed by hedging or tall planting, and displays more than 3,700 specimens that change with the seasons. Plantings include spring bulbs, apple and cherry blossom trees, a range of astilbe, deutzia, saxifrages, hydrangeas, roses and rhododendrons, as well as less common species such as rodgersia pinnata superba and agrostemma. A tea-room operated by the Trust sits beside the garden, offering refreshments and a reference guide for identifying the flora. Beyond the walled area, the estate extends over 16 acres of woodland noted for its rhododendron stands and a small herd of Highland cattle. No admission charge is mentioned, but the site is publicly open; visitors can reach it via the local road network serving High Carolside.
Pollok Country Park
Wellmeadow · 17 miles
Spanning 146 hectares, the country park sits between Shawlands, Crossmyloof and Pollok in Glasgow, Scotland. The White Cart Water flows through the grounds, linking the area to Paisley, and the site represents the largest green space within the city. Recognition came in the late 2000s when it was named Britain’s Best Park in 2007 and Best Park in Europe in 2008, although a 2019 assessment described it as underused and suggested measures to attract more visitors. The land formed part of the Old Pollok Estate, home to the Maxwell family for over seven centuries, before Mrs Anne Maxwell Macdonald transferred the estate, including Pollok House, to Glasgow Corporation in 1966 on the condition that it remain public. Sporting facilities surround the core, such as the former Shawholm cricket ground (now a football venue since 2023), public playing fields at Nether Pollok and Norwood, private fields belonging to Police Scotland and Hutchesons’ Grammar School, a rugby pitch for Cartha Queens Park RFC, the Dumbreck Riding School, and three golf clubs – Haggs Castle, Pollok and Cowglen. Additional amenities include the Pollokshaws Bowling Club (donated in 1954), the Burrell Collection housed in a purpose-built gallery, a herd of Highland cattle, mountain-bike routes opened in 2004 by Chris Hoy, and the mounted and dog-handling divisions of Strathclyde Police. Two allotment sites are also present, one near Haggs Castle and another at Pollokshaws. Entry to the park is free. The nearest rail link is Pollokshaws West station on the Glasgow South Western Line, adjacent to the main entrance, while Shawlands station on the Cathcart Circle lies roughly 0.5 km away on foot. Vehicular access is provided by the Barrhead Road dual carriageway and by three other routes on the eastern side; a single walkway on the north bank of the White Cart offers pedestrian and cyclist entry from the north-west. Facilities such as the bowling club, galleries and sporting fields are spread throughout the area.
Haggs Castle
Shawmoss · 19 miles
A 16th-century tower house stands in the Pollokshields neighbourhood of Glasgow, recorded in mapping data as being close to the town of Shawmoss. Built in 1585 by Sir John Maxwell of Pollok and his wife Margaret Cunningham, the structure replaced the family’s earlier 14th-century Laigh Castle. Although originally intended as the Maxwells’ principal residence, it later functioned as a jointure house for widows and was abandoned in 1753 when Pollok House was completed. The basement subsequently served as a smithy, and the building was requisitioned by the military in 1943 before being divided into flats. From 1972 the Glasgow Corporation operated it as the Museum of Childhood until the museum closed in 1998, after which the castle returned to private occupation. The altered L-plan tower rises four storeys, the main block measuring roughly 17 m by 7.2 m. Ground-floor rooms include two chambers and a kitchen with a large fireplace, while the first floor contains a private room behind the main hall. Upper levels are accessed via a main stair and smaller corbelled stairs, leading to a square cap house and a stair tower fitted with square and round gun loops. Notable decorative elements comprise cable-moulded string courses, moulded corbels and a carved panel above the door. Nineteenth-century work introduced larger dormer windows, a new south entrance and stair, and a north wing. As a private dwelling, the castle does not offer public admission, visitor facilities or on-site parking. Access is therefore limited to residents and authorised personnel.
