Museum of the Home
Shoreditch · 1.2 miles
A series of period-room displays and contemporary galleries examines domestic life from the early-modern era to the present, inviting visitors to consider how ideas of “home” shape everyday experience. Housed in an 18th-century Grade I-listed former almshouse on Kingsland Road, Hoxton, the museum lies close to Shoreditch and is operated by the Geffrye Museum Trust. The buildings originated in 1714 as fourteen four-room almshouses for the widows of ironmongers, funded by a bequest from Sir Robert Geffrye. After the Ironmongers’ Company transferred the site to the London County Council in 1911, the Geffrye Museum opened on 2 April 1914, initially focusing on furniture and interior design. Over the twentieth century the institution shifted toward educational programmes for schoolchildren and, following the abolition of the Inner London Education Authority, became a charitable trust in 1991. A major redevelopment, announced in 2019 and completed in summer 2021, expanded exhibition space by 80 per cent and public areas by 50 per cent, adding basement galleries, a café, a learning pavilion, reference libraries and replanted gardens. The entrance now faces Hoxton station. Admission is free, and the venue offers step-free access throughout, with on-site toilets for visitors. The museum’s location on Kingsland Road is served by local bus routes and is within walking distance of Shoreditch’s high street amenities. The site’s historic garden, originally laid out by Fanny Wilkinson in 1900–01, remains a feature of the public space.

Victoria Park
Homerton · 0.6 miles
Covering 86.18 hectares, Victoria Park ranks as the largest green space in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and attracts around nine million visitors annually. Situated on the north-eastern fringe of the borough, it lies between Bethnal Green to the west, Bow to the south, Hackney Wick to the east and the borough of Hackney to the north, with Homerton identified as the nearest town. The A1205 Grove Road bisects the park, and a network of gates provides access for pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles on all sides. The layout, commissioned after a 1841 Act of Parliament and executed by Sir James Pennethorne between 1842 and 1846, reflects the design principles of Regent’s Park. Waterways frame the site: the Regent’s Canal runs along its western edge and the former Hertford Union Canal borders the south. Notable features include replica Dogs of Alcibiades statues at the Sewardstone Road entrance, and two Grade II-listed pedestrian alcoves at the eastern end that incorporate stone fragments from the 1760 refurbishment of Old London Bridge. A former bathing pond gave way to a lido opened in 1936, which after wartime damage reopened in 1952, closed in 1986 and was demolished in 1990. The park has also served as a venue for public speech, political rallies and, during the Second World War, as an anti-aircraft site. The London Borough of Tower Hamlets manages the park and publishes its opening times. Visitors can enter through multiple gates, and the park contains canals, statues and listed alcoves. Facilities such as the historic lido site and the open lawns are available for recreational use, while the park’s heritage status is reflected in the listed structures within its boundaries.

Sutton House
Dalston Junction · 0.6 miles
A rare example of red-brick Tudor architecture stands on Homerton High Street in the London Borough of Hackney. Built in 1535 for Sir Ralph Sadler, Principal Secretary of State to Henry VIII, the three-storey H-plan house is the oldest residential building in the area and holds a Grade II* listing. Originally called Bryck Place, it passed through a succession of owners – cloth merchant John Machell, members of the Drapers’ and Vintners’ Companies, and various private tenants – before being divided and altered in the eighteenth century, when sash windows and Georgian features were added to an expanded east wing. By the nineteenth century the property served as a boys’ and later a girls’ school, and after a series of legal disputes the western half was formally defined as Sutton House. The National Trust acquired the manor in the 1930s and, after periods of neglect and use as a wartime fire-wardens’ centre, the building was restored in the early 1990s and opened as a public museum. Today the house operates under the National Trust and includes a museum, a café, an art gallery and a book-and-gift shop, together with education and community programmes and a licence for civil marriages. Wheelchair access is limited. The site is reachable on foot from Hackney Central and Homerton stations on the London Overground’s North London Line, and several bus routes serve the surrounding streets. The nearest town centre is Dalston Junction. As a listed landmark, Sutton House remains a focal point for local heritage within the Hackney area.
