Wentworth Castle
Hood Green · 3.1 miles
A grade-I listed country house near Hood Green, in the parish of Stainborough close to Barnsley, South Yorkshire, presents an example of early-18th-century design set within extensive parkland. The building now accommodates the Northern College for Residential and Community Education, while the surrounding gardens and grounds are open to visitors. The estate originated as the Cutler house, erected for Sir Gervase Cutler in 1670 before being bought by Thomas Wentworth, later Earl of Strafford, in 1708. Wentworth renamed the property and commissioned a major remodel around 1711, employing the military architect Johann von Bodt and later the architect James Gibbs for a long gallery completed in 1724. The east façade, described by Nikolaus Pevsner as unusually palatial, reflects a Continental Baroque influence comparable with Chatsworth. A garden folly known as Stainborough Castle, built as a sham ruin, remains on the grounds. From 2001 until mid-2019 the Wentworth Castle Heritage Trust managed the site, keeping it open to the public seven days a week. Although the gardens were temporarily closed in 2017, a partnership involving the National Trust, Northern College and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council led to their reopening on 8 June 2019. Visitors can therefore explore the historic house, the folly and the restored parkland without a specified admission charge, and the site remains accessible throughout the year.

Lowe Stand
Upper Hoyland · 0.6 miles
Lowe Stand is an 18th-century folly built for Thomas Watson-Wentworth, 1st Marquess of Rockingham, and likely originally intended as a hunting lodge. It is situated in the South Yorkshire town of Hoyland, 5 miles (8 km) south-east of Barnsley. Today the stand is a Grade II listed building but is in a fairly advanced state of decay. In 2008 the deeds were handed over from the council to voluntary group, the Friends of Hoyland Lowe Stand. The council has given permission to restore it according to the plan produced.

📸 Landmarks & sights
Monk Bretton Priory
Cundy Cross · 2.5 miles
The ruined medieval complex at Lundwood offers a glimpse of a Cluniac priory founded in 1154 by Adam Fitswane. Situated in the village of Lundwood, close to the settlement of Monk Bretton in the Barnsley borough of South Yorkshire, the site lies a short distance from the town of Cundy Cross. The remains include the outlines of the church and cloister, which have been the focus of archaeological work since the 1920s and more recently under a survey led by Dr Hugh Willmott of the University of Sheffield. Visitors can walk among the stone foundations and view interpretive information provided by English Heritage, the body that now cares for the scheduled ancient monument. The priory originally bore the name Priory of St Mary Magdalene of Lund before adopting the name of the neighbouring village. In 1350 Prior John de Birthwaite received a land grant from Sir William de Notton and his wife Isabel, intended to fund a chantry chapel at Woolley Church. The monastic community was dissolved on 30 November 1538, after which the property passed to the Blithman family, was sold to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury in 1580, and later given to his son Henry. Today the site is open to the public under English Heritage management, with visitor details available on the English Heritage website. No admission fee or specific facilities are listed in the supplied material.

Wentworth Woodhouse
Wentworth · 3.1 miles
The sheer scale of Wentworth Woodhouse makes it a notable example of a British country house, set within a 180-acre park on the outskirts of the village of Wentworth in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The house holds a Grade I listing from Historic England and comprises more than 300 rooms across 250,000 sq ft of floor space, of which around 124,600 sq ft are designated as living area. Its extensive estate once stretched to 15,000 acres, and the surrounding parkland remains a prominent feature of the site. Construction began in 1725 when Thomas Watson-Wentworth, later Lord Malton, replaced an earlier Jacobean building with an English Baroque western range. The project was later expanded under his son, the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, who employed Henry Flitcroft to create the grand east front that faces the park. Subsequent alterations were made by John Carr of York and James “Athenian” Stuart in the 1770s, adding an extra storey, porticoes and decorative panels. Ownership passed to the Fitzwilliam family in the 18th century and remained with the last earl until 1989; the property is now held by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, which is overseeing ongoing restoration. A royal visit in July 1912 saw King George V and Queen Mary stay at the house for four days. As a listed landmark, the house and its park are recognised for their architectural and historic significance, and the trust provides information for those wishing to view the site.
