Robin Hood's Grave
🗿 Monument

Robin Hood's Grave

Bradley · 1.9 miles

The monument traditionally associated with the burial of the folk hero Robin Hood stands within the privately owned woodland of Kirklees Park Estate, West Yorkshire, close to the ruined remains of Kirklees Priory and about 650 metres from the surviving gatehouse where the outlaw is thought to have lodged at the time of his death. The stone lies near the village of Bradley and is listed as a historic memorial by Historic England. The low stone wall and fence that surround the gravestone date from the nineteenth century, when local labourers were reputed to remove fragments as a cure for toothache. The inscription, rendered in a form of Middle English that scholars such as Maurice Keen describe as clearly spurious, claims the interment of “Robert, Earl of Huntingdon” on 24 December 1247 – a date that does not exist in the medieval calendar. References to a grave marker at this site appear in documents from the sixteenth century, including John Leland’s Collectanea and Richard Grafton’s 1569 chronicle, while later observers such as Ralph Thoresby and Richard Gough recorded the stone as heavily weathered and partially illegible. A 2015 investigation by the television programme *Expedition Unknown* employed ground-penetrating radar but found no evidence of a burial disturbance. Visitors should note that the monument is set in private woodland with no visitor facilities, admission charges or official opening hours provided. Access is therefore at the visitor’s own risk, and there are no amenities such as car parks, toilets or information displays on site.

Tolson Museum

Moldgreen · 1.9 miles

Set within Ravensknowle Park on Wakefield Road, the former Victorian mansion known as Ravensknowle Hall now houses the Tolson Museum. The building, erected in the late 1850s for textile magnate John Beaumont and designed by London architect Richard Tress, stands in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, close to the settlement of Moldgreen. The museum is operated by Kirklees Council, offers free entry and provides limited wheelchair access; opening hours are listed on the museum’s public timetable. The hall was bequeathed to Huddersfield Corporation in 1919 by Legh Tolson as a memorial to his two nephews who fell in the First World War. Formal inauguration took place on 27 May 1922, initially presenting a natural-history collection of rocks, fossils and stuffed birds. A 1980s refurbishment redirected the focus toward the region’s industrial heritage, adding displays of local archaeology, weaving machinery and textiles. Visitors can explore a reconstructed Victorian schoolroom and a transport exhibition occupying a rear extension, which includes road-building techniques and examples of horsedrawn and motor vehicles. Among the cars on view are the three-wheeled LSD, once produced locally between 1919 and 1924, and a Valveless model recovered from South Africa. The museum also incorporates the Grade II-listed remnants of a hypocaust from Slack Roman Fort, reassembled within the park grounds.

Lister Mills

Bradford · 9.3 miles

The former silk works, now known as Lister Mills, dominates the skyline of the Manningham district in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Built in 1873 to replace an earlier mill lost to fire, the Italianate Victorian structure is recorded as a Grade II* listed building by Historic England. Its most recognisable element is a 249-foot chimney that can be spotted from much of the city, while the extensive brick façades and the site’s overall mass cover roughly 27 acres. The mill’s location is close to the centre of Bradford, making it reachable on foot or by public transport, and the surrounding area includes a piazza and an underground car park that were created on the former reservoir site. At its peak the mill employed around 11 000 people and produced luxury textiles such as velvet and silk, supplying material for King George V’s coronation and later for the White House in 1976. During the Second World War the works turned to military fabrics, creating parachute silk, flame-proof wool and khaki battledress. After a decline in the 1980s and closure in 1999, the complex entered a regeneration programme led by Urban Splash. The first phase delivered 131 new homes and three ground-floor commercial units, completed in 2006, while a second phase added a glass-and-steel roof over the velvet mill, preserving original architectural features and providing additional apartments and retail space. As a residential and mixed-use development, the site does not charge admission; visitors can view the historic exterior and chimney from the public piazza or nearby streets.

Bradford Industrial Museum

Haigh Fold · 9.9 miles

Visitors can explore a collection of working industrial machinery at the former Moorside Mills in Eccleshill, Bradford, close to the Haigh Fold area. The mill was erected by John Moore in 1875 for worsted spinning and later converted from steam to electricity in the early 20th century. After a change of ownership in 1908, a Cole, Marchent and Morley engine was installed in 1910 and the site expanded during the First World War, when a clock-tower war memorial was added in 1919. Subsequent sales led to its acquisition by Bradford Council in 1970, and the building opened as the Bradford Industrial Museum on 14 December 1974. The museum remains owned and operated by the council. The ground-floor galleries illustrate the breadth of Bradford’s industrial heritage. The Motive-Power gallery holds 19th-century waterwheels, steam, oil and gas engines, together with an engineer’s workshop and a uniflow steam engine rescued from Linton mill. The Transport gallery presents Jowett cars, Scott motorbikes, Baines bicycles, a 1928 Wallis & Steevens steam roller, and the industrial locomotive “Nellie” (an 0-4-0 saddle-tank built by Hudswell Clarke in 1922). Outside, a British Railways crane wagon and a historic tramcar are displayed. The Print gallery showcases the last hot-metal typesetting equipment used by newspapers, including a monotype keyboard, Linotype forme from the final edition of the Yorkshire Sports (2 May 1981), and a Wharfedale stop-cylinder press. On the first floor, textile galleries trace the journey of worsted cloth from fleece to finished suit, with spinning preparations demonstrated by original preparer machines. Admission and opening times are managed by Bradford Council.
