Rixton Claypits Local Nature Reserve
Hollins Green · 1.9 miles
The former clay-extraction site at Rixton, close to the village of Hollins Green in Warrington, has reverted to a mosaic of ponds, scrub, woodland and damp grassland. Work on the boulder-clay began in the 1920s to supply a nearby brickworks and stopped in 1965; since then natural regeneration has created a range of habitats that are now managed as a local amenity by Warrington Borough Council. Two sections covering a total of 15 hectares are designated both as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation, recognised for their calcareous grassland and for supporting the largest breeding population of great crested newts in Cheshire. The reserve, formally created in 1996, offers waymarked paths that guide visitors around the water bodies and grassland, and a small visitor centre provides information about the site’s ecology. Angling is allowed on the lake that lies between the two protected sections, with the Warrington Anglers Association overseeing the activity; the principal fish species are tench, bream and roach, while carp and pike are also present. Access is via the surrounding countryside, and the reserve is under the care of the local council, which maintains the facilities for public use.

Woodheys Park
West Timperley · 3.1 miles
Spanning roughly 7.5 hectares (18.53 acres), the park lies on Kenmore Road off Woodhouse Lane in Sale, Greater Manchester, with an additional entrance on Link Road. Although the official name is Woodheys Park, locals often refer to it as “Pinky Park” because pigs from a nearby field historically wandered into the grounds. The site sits close to the residential catchments of Sale, Broadheath and Timperley, and the nearest town recorded by the council is West Timperley. Management falls to Trafford Council, which installed a perimeter fence in 2006 to improve night-time security. The park provides a range of recreational facilities: an 18-hole pitch-and-putt course, a five-a-side football pitch, a smaller pitch equipped with cricket stumps and goalposts, and a dedicated play area for children under seven. A meeting room is available for hire, and public toilets operate for the whole period the park is open. Opened in the early 1970s, the area experienced decline during the 1990s before a community-led refurbishment after the turn of the century, largely driven by the Friends of Woodheys Park. Recent housing development around the perimeter has been linked to rising local property values, reflecting the park’s role as a safe, family-friendly space.
