Lowe Stand
Upper Hoyland · 2.5 miles
Lowe Stand is an 18th-century folly built for Thomas Watson-Wentworth, 1st Marquess of Rockingham, and likely originally intended as a hunting lodge. It is situated in the South Yorkshire town of Hoyland, 5 miles (8 km) south-east of Barnsley. Today the stand is a Grade II listed building but is in a fairly advanced state of decay. In 2008 the deeds were handed over from the council to voluntary group, the Friends of Hoyland Lowe Stand. The council has given permission to restore it according to the plan produced.

Wentworth Woodhouse
Wentworth · 3.1 miles
The sheer scale of Wentworth Woodhouse makes it a notable example of a British country house, set within a 180-acre park on the outskirts of the village of Wentworth in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The house holds a Grade I listing from Historic England and comprises more than 300 rooms across 250,000 sq ft of floor space, of which around 124,600 sq ft are designated as living area. Its extensive estate once stretched to 15,000 acres, and the surrounding parkland remains a prominent feature of the site. Construction began in 1725 when Thomas Watson-Wentworth, later Lord Malton, replaced an earlier Jacobean building with an English Baroque western range. The project was later expanded under his son, the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, who employed Henry Flitcroft to create the grand east front that faces the park. Subsequent alterations were made by John Carr of York and James “Athenian” Stuart in the 1770s, adding an extra storey, porticoes and decorative panels. Ownership passed to the Fitzwilliam family in the 18th century and remained with the last earl until 1989; the property is now held by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, which is overseeing ongoing restoration. A royal visit in July 1912 saw King George V and Queen Mary stay at the house for four days. As a listed landmark, the house and its park are recognised for their architectural and historic significance, and the trust provides information for those wishing to view the site.
