Sheffield Manor Lodge
Wybourn · 3.7 miles
A seventeenth-century lodge set within the remnants of a former deer park, now part of Norfolk Park on the outskirts of Wybourn, offers visitors a glimpse of Tudor domestic architecture. Constructed around 1516 for George Talbot, the fourth Earl of Shrewsbury, the site is open without charge and its opening hours are listed on the official notice board. The surviving fabric includes sections of the original kitchens, a long gallery and the Grade II* Turret House, often called Queen Mary’s Tower. The turret contains elaborate sixteenth-century ceiling work and, according to the 17th-century antiquary William Dugdale, bears heraldic panels that feature the arms of Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon and the Earl’s second wife, Elizabeth Walden. Built by the mid-1570s, the three-storey turret comprises two rooms per floor and a corner stair that extends onto the roof, serving as a viewing platform comparable with the Hunting Tower at Chatsworth House. The lodge also played a role in the confinement of Mary, Queen of Scots. After her arrival in England in 1568, she was placed under the custody of George Talbot, the sixth Earl, and spent periods at the manor from 1569 onward. Contemporary accounts note that the queen’s household occupied a range of rooms, from a chapel and great hall to specialised spaces such as a brewhouse, pantry and a still for distilled medicines. The Turret House is reputed locally to be haunted by Mary’s spirit. Access is provided via a nearby car park, and basic visitor facilities are available on site.
