View allRigodunum Roman Fort
Castleshaw · 3.1 miles
The remains of a Roman castellum sit on Castle Hill at the eastern edge of the Castleshaw Valley, overlooking the landscape below Standedge in Greater Manchester. The archaeological site, recorded as the Rigodunum Roman Fort on OpenStreetMap, lies on a step of Grindslow shale and commands clear views along the Deva Victrix (Chester) to Eboracum (York) Roman road that once crossed the Pennines at this pass. From the fort the valley can be seen in both directions, although higher ground surrounds the position. Constructed of turf and timber around AD 79, the original fort housed roughly 500 auxiliary soldiers before being slighted in the mid-90s. A smaller fortlet replaced it circa AD 105, later expanded with gates, a granary, an oven, a hypocaust and a courtyard building, supporting a garrison of fewer than 100 men. In the early 2nd century a civilian settlement (vicus) developed around the fortlet, likely serving the logistical needs of the nearby garrison. Both the fort, the later fortlet and the surrounding settlement are protected as a scheduled monument, reflecting their national archaeological importance. The site has been examined since the 18th century, with early plans drawn by antiquarian Thomas Percival and later trenching by local investigators, though the remains have never been fully excavated due to their protected status.
Rochdale Pioneers Museum
Rochdale · 3.7 miles
The former 18th-century warehouse at 31 Toad Lane, Rochdale, Greater Manchester, is recognised as the site where the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society opened its shop on 21 December 1844, an event widely regarded as the birthplace of the modern co-operative movement. The building, now a Grade II listed structure, houses the Rochdale Pioneers Museum, which is owned and run by the Co-operative Heritage Trust and offers free entry. It is fully step-free, providing wheelchair access throughout. Inside, visitors encounter a recreation of the original shop, complete with the simple furniture, scales and goods that were on sale in 1844. Exhibits trace the development of early co-operatives, the Rochdale Principles, and the broader social impact of the movement, covering topics such as women’s rights, education, fair trade and social reform. The museum also highlights notable individuals, the evolution of retail, and the international spread of co-operation. The site’s recent history includes a major renovation funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, completed in 2012, which added new rooms, restored the third floor and improved displays. Earlier structural repairs in the 1970s involved inserting a reinforced concrete cage to stabilise the walls while preserving the historic façade. The museum’s location on Toad Lane is accessible from the town centre, and the surrounding area features cobbled streets, 19th-century gas lamps and a Victorian post box, reflecting the setting restored by Rochdale Council.
Tandle Hill Country Park
Thornham Fold · 3.7 miles
Offering extensive beech woodland and open grassland across roughly 110 acres (45 ha), Tandle Hill Country Park lies on the outskirts of Royton in Greater Manchester, close to the settlement of Thornham Fold. The landscape is interlaced with a network of trails and paths that lead into the surrounding countryside, and on clear days the summit affords views of Manchester and the Welsh mountains. Facilities include a countryside centre opened in 1994, picnic areas, a children’s play area and two resident countryside rangers who can provide information and guidance. The hill’s past stretches back to its days as part of the Thornham township within the historic parish of Middleton. In the nineteenth century it served as a meeting point for radicals, prompting the later planting of beech trees to discourage large gatherings. It subsequently became a hunting park and private game reserve belonging to the Thornham Estate, changed hands in 1861, and was eventually gifted to the people of Royton by councillor Norris Bradbury in September 1919 as a peace offering after the First World War. A granite marker near the Oozewood entrance records this donation. The site was formally designated a country park on 1 July 1971. At the highest point stands a Portland-stone war memorial unveiled on 22 October 1921 by the Earl of Derby, commemorating local men who fell in the First World War.
Gallery Oldham
Mumps · 4.3 miles
Gallery Oldham is a free-to-view public museum and art gallery in the Cultural Quarter of central Oldham, in Greater Manchester, England.
Saddleworth Museum
Uppermill · 5 miles
Set in the remains of the 19th-century Victoria Mill, the museum in Uppermill, Saddleworth, Greater Manchester, presents the local history of the area. The derelict mill was bought in 1959 by Roger Tanner, and with the assistance of volunteers the sole surviving building was converted into a museum that opened to the public in 1962. Over the following two decades the institution expanded its collections, developed new exhibits and secured charitable status, while a board of trustees was established to guide its mission. A public appeal in 1980 funded the addition of a community gallery for art exhibitions and local events, and partnerships with nearby organisations were forged. A major refurbishment followed a successful National Heritage Lottery Fund grant in 2014, delivering a modern reception area, fully refurbished galleries with interactive displays and dedicated learning spaces for children. After closing on 20 March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the museum reopened on 22 May 2021 with an upgraded website, virtual experiences, online shopping and ticketing. Volunteers continue to support daily operations, and the Friends of the Saddleworth Museum and Gallery organise fundraising events and membership schemes. Admission is subject to a charge and opening times are published on the museum’s listing; facilities include a visitor information desk and a shop.
