Memorial to Heroes of the Marine Engine Room

Pride Quarter · 17 miles

Set on St Nicholas Place at the Pier Head, the granite monument stands close to Liverpool’s Pride Quarter. The structure, listed at Grade II* for its historic and architectural interest, rises 48 feet (14.6 m) and is topped by a gilded flame. Its square, chamfered pedestal supports an obelisk whose lower corners bear carvings representing the four classical elements. Life-size stone figures of stokers and engineers adorn the east and west faces, a rare early-20th-century acknowledgement of working-class heroism in public art. The monument is publicly accessible and, as a street-level feature, does not require an admission charge. The original purpose of the memorial was to honour the thirty-two engineers who perished when the Titanic sank on 15 April 1912, reflecting Liverpool’s role as the ship’s port of registry and the home of the White Star Line. Funding came from an international public subscription, and the design was commissioned to Sir William Goscombe John. After the heavy loss of life in the First World War, the dedication was expanded to include all maritime engine-room fatalities incurred in the line of duty. Visible shrapnel damage from bombs dropped during the Blitz of the Second World War remains on the stone, attesting to its survival through conflict. Historic England notes the monument’s influence on later war-memorial design, and architectural commentary highlights the naturalistic quality of the figures. Visitors can view the monument at street level from the surrounding promenade, with easy pedestrian access from the nearby city centre.

Liverpool Beatles Museum

Cavern Quarter · 18 miles

Located at 23 Mathew Street in Liverpool, the Beatles Museum occupies a five-storey former warehouse dating from the early 19th century, now protected as a Grade II listed building. The museum opened on 13 July 2018 after being established by Roag Best, who is related to the early Beatles management family. Its position places it within walking distance of the Cavern Club, the venue closely associated with the group’s early performances. The exhibition presents around three hundred original artefacts, with an additional twelve hundred items stored off-site. Visitor flow is organised across three dedicated floors, each illustrating a distinct phase of the group’s career: 1959–1962, 1963–1966 and 1967–1970. Highlights include George Harrison’s Futurama guitar, John Lennon’s Sergeant Pepper medals, the cello used on “I Am the Walrus”, and Pete Best’s Premier drum. Other pieces comprise Paul McCartney’s bass speaker, Lennon’s custom-made egg chair, police log books from the Beatles’ New York visit, the “All You Need Is Love” doll from the BBC broadcast, and gifts presented by Elvis Presley. Photographs of various celebrity visitors are also displayed, and a mural painted by Pete Best was added in 2020. Admission to the museum is subject to a charge. The site is accessed via Mathew Street, with the surrounding Cavern Quarter area providing additional amenities. As a listed building, the interior retains historic features while accommodating the museum’s displays, allowing a visit to be combined with a trip to the nearby Cavern Club.

Greenbank Park

Wavertree · 18 miles

The park lies in the Mossley Hill suburb of south Liverpool, close to the well-known Penny Lane and adjacent to Sefton Park. Although the nearest town listed on mapping data is Wavertree, the site is set within a residential neighbourhood and is bounded by mature trees that frame a small central lake. The water feature dominates the middle of the grounds and provides a visual focus for visitors strolling along the perimeter paths. The land that now forms the park was part of the Greenbank estate owned by the Rathbone family from the late eighteenth century until the mid-twentieth century. In 1897 the city corporation reached an agreement with the Rathbones to acquire a portion of the property, and the resulting public space retains the walled garden as the sole surviving element of the original house grounds. Within the garden an artwork by Lulu Quinn commemorates Eleanor Rathbone, linking the site to its historic owners. Facilities include a children’s playground, football pitches and a fishing pond where anglers may try their luck while observing nesting waterfowl and herons. A bridge spans the northern end of the lake, and the surrounding open grassland is designated as a conservation area. Managed by Liverpool City Council, the park is open to the public without charge and can be accessed on foot from the surrounding streets. Information about the site is available through the council’s official web page.
