About this role
The role is a permanent Maintenance Assistant Higher based at University Hospital Southampton in Hampshire, working within the Estates team that maintains the hospital’s critical mechanical, electrical and building systems. The position supports the delivery of safe, reliable services across plumbing, drainage, ventilation, electrical installations and related infrastructure, reporting to a Designated Supervisor and operating as part of a replacement post within the Estates department.
Applicants must demonstrate practical experience in plumbing, electrical or building repairs, backed by relevant technical knowledge, and be organised enough to manage tasks independently while knowing when to seek guidance. A clean driving licence, willingness to collect materials and residence within 60 minutes of the hospital are essential, as is the ability to work safely at height, in confined spaces and in clinical areas such as operating theatres. Experience across multiple maintenance disciplines is advantageous, and the role requires flexibility to work a seven-day rota and undertake rostered overtime.
The position offers a permanent contract with a salary of £25,760 to £27,476 per year, inclusive of NHS pension scheme benefits and access to an employee benefits platform. Training and development are provided alongside skilled craftspeople, with flexible working options available. Applications must be submitted by 15 October 2026 through the original advert.
