Pontefract · 14 miles
A former Carnegie library now serves as Pontefract Museum, occupying an Art Nouveau building in the centre of Pontefract, West Yorkshire. Designed by George Pennington and opened as a library in 1904, the structure was repurposed for museum use in 1975 after a new library was erected elsewhere. The conversion retained the tiled entrance hall and original furnishings, and the building was entered on the Grade II listed register at the time of its reopening in March 1975. The museum is managed by Wakefield Museums & Castles, offers free admission and provides step-free access throughout, with toilets available on the premises. The displays focus on the town’s archaeological, artistic and social heritage. Exhibits include material from Pontefract Castle and the nearby St John’s Priory, notably the Ackworth Hoard of almost six hundred Civil War-era coins. The collection also illustrates the local liquorice trade, featuring packaging from the famous Pontefract Cakes factories and the sealed ballot box from the country’s first secret ballot in 1872. Additional highlights trace the town’s mining past, decorative and applied arts, fine art, photographs and printed ephemera. Three permanent exhibition spaces house these items, while a separate area accommodates temporary shows, and a reference room preserves archival documents relating to Pontefract’s history.

Thorpe Marsh Nature Reserve
Almholme · 15 miles
Covering 77 hectares, the reserve sits on the flood-prone lowland of the River Don south-west of Thorpe in Balne and north of Doncaster in South Yorkshire. Managed jointly by volunteers operating for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, the site occupies the marshland that formed after the closure of the adjacent coal-fired power station in 1994 and the demolition of its cooling towers in 2012. The landscape is characterised by wet grassland, reed beds and a network of ditches that support a variety of wet-land wildlife. The fields within the reserve retain a ridge-and-furrow pattern dating from the medieval open-field system, still evident in Reedholme, Applehurst and Cockshaw. Historical documents from the early 18th century refer to the area in connection with the River Dun Navigation, while the name Thorpe Marsh itself first appears in 1731 letters concerning that project. Remains of Reedholme House, recorded on an 1849 map, are still visible, and the site’s long-standing association with flax cultivation is documented in 1790s claims for agricultural subsidies. The nearest settlement identified on OpenStreetMap is Almholme, providing a reference point for visitors approaching the reserve. No admission charge or specific visitor facilities are mentioned in the source material, but the presence of volunteer staff suggests basic access for walkers and wildlife observers.
Wetherby Grange Park
Wetherby · 17 miles
A multi-purpose sports complex on the outskirts of Wetherby provides facilities for padel, rugby union, crown-green and flat-green bowls and junior football, making it the largest community sports site in the town. The park lies close to Junction 45 of the A1(M) and is a ten- to fifteen-minute walk from Wetherby bus station, with a car park accommodating roughly one hundred vehicles. The present layout dates from 1988, when the former cricket ground was replaced after the second Wetherby bypass – now the A1(M) – divided the pitch. Prior to the bypass the area had been the site of Wetherby Grange, a stately house demolished in 1962. The rugby club moved here from Loshpot Lane in Kirk Deighton, and a new clubhouse opened shortly afterwards; it was rebuilt between 2012 and 2013, retaining a single-storey form but offering larger bar and dressing-room spaces, as well as separate facilities for match officials. The bowling club maintains its own wooden pavilion adjacent to the greens, separate from the main clubhouse. Facilities include four rugby pitches to the south, two of which are flood-lit and a small grandstand added in the late 2010s; a single cricket pitch with practice nets behind the clubhouse; and two bowling greens – one flat, one crown – laid in 1987 and illuminated for night play. A children’s playground and a catering unit near the rugby pitches complement the sports provision. The site is shared by Wetherby Cricket Club, Wetherby RUFC, Wetherby Bowling Club and Kirk Deighton Junior Football Club, each using the designated areas.
